Space background

Post by Pikachu3828 »

I know I'm not as good as stevie_2 when it comes to Photoshop, but that doesn't mean I can't use it at all  May I? In this tutorial I'll show you how to make a space background like so:
Image

Step one is to make a new document. Make it rather large, around 500-600 pixels else the stars will all be too close together. Then create a new layer and fill it black like so
Image

For the next step, go to Filter - Noise - Add Noise. For distribution select Gaussian and select the Monochromatic checkbox. The amount is up to you. You don't want too much noise nor too little. I selected 12.5% here.
Image

Next step is Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur. The radias need only be about 0.5
Image

For the next step go to Image - Adjustments - Threshold. I find a setting of around 38 works nicely. You should end up with something that's starting to look like space, even if it is somewhat crude at this point.
Image

Next step is Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur again. A radius of around 0.8 should do it. Beginning to look more like stars now, eh?
Image

Now the first actual arty part (sintead of inputting figures into filters) Make a new layer with white as the foreground colour and select the airbrush tool (select a brush, go to the brushes tab in the far right and select "airbrush") The pressure need only be at a very low setting. Now just pick some stars and paint a little glow on them. You're finished!

In fact, you can do near enough the same thing in PSP.

1: Fill a blank image with black.
2: Adjust -|> Add/Remove Noise -|> Add Noise...
Monochrome, Gaussian, 25%
3: Adjust -|> Blur -|> Gaussian Blur -|> 0,5 px
4: Adjust -|> Brightness/Contrast -|> Threshold
33 worked nicely.
5: Adjust -|> Blur -|> Gaussian Blur -|> 1,0 px
6: Use airbrush, size 3, density 100, hardness 0 and highlight a few stars.

Here are my results with PSP9
Image
I set it as my desktop background, works very nicely.

I have also written a tutorial for the GIMP, for a desktop background

1: Find out your resolution, then create an image of that size. For this purpose, mine is 1024x768
2: Fill the image with black
3: Filters -|> Noise -|> Hurl...
Seed: anything Randomisation: 1 Repeats: 1
4: Filters -|> Blur -|> Gaussian...
IIR, radius 1,0px
5: Image -|> Mode -|> Indexed...
Black and White
6: Image -|> Mode -|> RGB
This is basically threshold ;3
7: Filters -|> Blur -|> Gaussian...
IIR, radius 2,0px
Here, you choose if you want to highlight stars or do a flare.
If you want to do a flare,
8a: Filters -|> Light Effects -|> FlareFX
Set it to percent, and change to suit you.

If you want to highlight stars, use an airbrush, foreground white and highlight away ^_~

Here are my results using a flare: http://pokeden.com/tutorial/space2.png
Please note that the quality is choppy at first, because it is interlaced. That basically means those of you on dial up can see a rough outline of what this /is/ before the accurate image loads.
Hallo n_~

Sorry but it's very very expensive. The GIMP is free, though.
