Article #10: Celebi ex

Post by Raikou Trainer »

This was originally written in mid-late 2006, so combos, ratings, etc. will be outdated.

Name: Celebi ex

Type: Grass

HP: 70

Basic Pokemon

(G) Spiral Leaf
Flip a coin. If heads, put 1 damage counter on each of your opponent's Pokemon. If tails, remove 1 damage counter from each of your Pokemon.

(GC) Time Trap 30
Flip a coin. If heads, look at the top 4 cards of your opponent's deck, and put them back on top of your opponent's deck in any order. If tails, look at the top 4 cards of your deck, and put them back on top of your deck in any order.

Weakness: Fire

Resistance: None

Retreat: (C)

Analysis

HP: 70 is kind of low for a Basic ex. Sorry, Energy Root won't work on Celebi ex. Low Pressure System will increase it to 80, but Celebi ex may still be an easy 2 Prizes for your opponent.

Weakness: Fire is played occasionally, so you'd better watch out.

Resistance: None, so let's continue.

Retreat: One is average for a Basic. Celebi ex also uses little Energy for its attacks, so go ahead and pay the cost if you have to.

Spiral Leaf: Don't rely on this attack to do what you want it to do. Either dealing up to 60 damage or removing 60 damage is always a good thing, but unfortunately, it's spread out amongst all of either your or your opponent's Pokemon, so it's not as useful as it looks.

Time Trap: 30 damage is good for the Energy cost, but being able to rearrange the top 4 cards of either player's deck (with a flip) is even better. If you look at your opponent's cards, you can easily screw up their strategy, provided that they don't shuffle the deck or draw the 4 cards. If you look through your deck, you can easily plan ahead for what your opponent might throw at you.

Combos

None this time. Celebi ex relys on luck of the coin flip more than other cards can help it.

Ratings

Unlimited: There are much better basic Pokemon out there with 70 HP that aren't ex's, so Celebi ex might not work well. There's also Pokedex (Base), New Pokedex (Neo Genesis), and Pokedex HANDY909 (FireRed/LeafGreen) available, which are very similar to the tails effect of Celebi ex's Time Trap, so use those if you want to rearrange your deck. 3/10

Modified: Celebi ex doesn't do much better here. Usually, attacks are fiercer, easily doing more than 70 HP per attack. So Celebi ex may not survive long enough to be useful. 4/10

Limited: Even though this card looks promising in Limited, remember that losing an ex means your opponent gets half of their Prizes. Personally, I wouldn't put it in your deck, since it has such low HP and sub-par attacks. 2/10

Conclusion

Although Celebi ex is a secret rare card in Unseen Forces, it's better off in your binder or used as trade bait than playing it.
